Our Evening Serving Dinner at the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill

The Ronald McDonald House Grounds

“When life becomes unrecognizable and uncertain, that’s where Hope lives.  In a place called Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill. Keeping families close at our home away from home.”

This is the mantra of the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill, and it if you have ever had a chance to visit it, you will know it stands true.  A little history about the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill, is they have grown from 24 rooms to52 guest rooms. The rooms are apartment- style and are comfortable and cozy to accommodate families during their most trying hours as they visit local hospitals for the care and treatment of their children.  They host over 2,000 families per year and is at capacity at 52 families. Dealing with the illness of a child is difficult, and one of the wonderful attributes about the Ronald McDonald House is being with other families who are going through similar situations, which offers a comfort and support community during your stay, and long after you leave.

Hendrick Acura Southpoint Service Manager Patricia Fradenburg when asked, said “volunteering with the Ronald McDonald house touched her because you take a short amount of time out of your day to take a chore off the list of those families who are in the midst of medical situations with their children.  Taking the burden of worrying about dinner is a simple thing to us, and a big help for the families.”

Another great service the Ronald McDonald House offers is the preparation and serving of home cooked meals every night. This is where our Hendrick Acura Southpoint enters the picture, 8 employees volunteered to prepare and serve meals to the 45-50 families currently calling the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill Home.

Regional HR Coordinator Tameka Jeffreys Brown had this to share about the experience,

“Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house and providing the patients and their family with a warm meal was amazing. Everyone greeted us with a smiling face and they were so appreciative and kind. It is such an awesome feeling to be able to give to those who are going through such a trying time in their life. I wish them all the best and speedy recoveries.”

The items on the menu were fried chicken, green beans, sweet potatoes, and an assortment of cookies and these items were a hit!  The many children who came through the Hearth Dining Hall were smiling and playing and one 2-year old was happily walking around in her play high heeled shoes.

There are words formed from photographs and messages of Hope displayed on the walls of the Ronald McDonald House, and it is an uplifting sight, combined with the imaginative 2-year-old, who teetered across the stunning grounds in her plastic high heeled shoes.  The grounds are a magnificent sight, they foster imagination and provide a secure place for the children staying at Ronald McDonald House to play and dream. From the tall giraffe and three bears all made from EasiGrass to the beautiful flowers and plants, to the ultimate symbol of hope, the mosaic angel who displays, “We Rise By Lifting Others” on her multi-patterned tiled dress.

“It was such an honor to be able to serve a meal to the families that came through our line. The children were adorable, laughing, playing and showing off their toys all while battling serious health issues. I believe that we are blessed so that we may be a blessing to others.

My heart was so full because for a little while I was a Servant,” Regional HR Manager Pamela Berfet

Hendrick Acura Southpoint is honored and humbled to be able to volunteer their time at such a wonderful organization that does so many wonderful things for families during difficult medical times.  Until next time, we wish all of the families a road that may rise to their feet and be a little less difficult.
